2002 Girls North Team

North Team Wins Gold!

The Sixth Annual Girls North/South Matches were held at Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside, California. As part of the Girls Junior State Amateur, it is customary for the matches to be played the Sunday prior to the State qualifying round. Due to construction on the Monterey Peninsula Country Club, the matches were moved to beautiful and challenging Bayonet.
The day began with the JGANC hosting the teams to lunch. At that time the girls got to meet one another and relax a bit before competition began. It didn't take long for our top six golfers to focus on the task at hand and sweep the team matches, win four of the individual matches, tying one and losing only one match.
Our girls played great and were fine representatives of the Northern California and the JGANC. Three cheers for Ki-Shui Liao, Kimberly McCready, Laura Luethke, Rachel Schwartz, Jennifer Shipley and Casey Gee. They brought home the gold by beating Southern California 7 1/2 to 1 1/2. In the six years of this competition the North has won 4 times, tying once and losing once. What a record!

2002 Boys Junior America's Cup Team

Boys' Team finishes in 8th place. Pictures coming soon.

Silver Springs CC turned out to be a little bit more than a challenge than the Nor Cal team could master, especially the second round, which was our undoing. The first round we posted a fine 219 to put us in seond place, with a surprising Nevada team shooting 216. Nathan Pistacchio shot a great two-under 70, Kevin Lozares a solid 72 and Colin Peck a 77. We tossed out Andrew Temple's 79. The second round, played in pouring rain and 40 degree temperatures, sent our scores sky high. The boys just couldn't get it going. Kevin was low with 75, Nathan went up to an 83 and Colin had a 78. Andrew's 85 was not counted. The daily total was a disastrous 236. Our team went from second place to fourteenth. The final round was even colder, in the 30s, but at least it wasn't raining and there was no wind. Kevin Lozares, "Mr. Steady Eddy," came through again with another fine 72, Andrew was able to sink his putts which brought a solid 74 to post and both Nathan and Colin shot a 77. The final three day total was 678 which gave us eighth place.
What great representatives these four young men were for the JGANC! We are so proud of this "feature foursome." The great charge they made that final day, the way they conducted themselves through adversity, the respect they showed their fellow competitiors and for the glory of the game made them a real class act from beginning to end.

2002 Girls Junior America's Cup Team

Girls take silver medal finishing second. Pictures coming soon.

It's getting to be a habit. The joke of always being a bridesmaid and never a bride keeps coming up year after year. And so it was again.....outstanding play, but just short of being good enough for the gold. It seemed that we always could post two great scores, but the third additional round in the 70s didn't come through when needed.
The setting was Crane Creek CC in Boise, Idaho. Our team of Ki-Shui Liao from Alameda, Kimberly McCready from Placerville, Jennifer Shipley and Laura Luethke, both from Clovis made up our dynamic team. They impressed everyone who came in contact with them including their host family, club members and the young men who gathered around for the event. Their captain stated they were the most polite, appreciative and focused girls she has even taken to Junior America's Cup.
First round scores found us in second place by one shot and this is with a three stroke penalty given to Laura. The penalty wasn't the fault of our player after she was told her ball was in bounds. She proceeded with this in her mind only to have a rules official rule her ball out of bounds after she had picked up her provisional to assess when to drop. So we left the first day knowing we should be in first, but feeling we were in the best position to overtake Southern California (why is it always Southern Cal?) Our second day did us in. We had to cound an 84 and it is widely known there is no chance to win unless you post all three scores in the 70s. Nevertheless, we only lost 2 strokes to the leader so we felt it was possible to come back strong on the final day. The last round was strong but so was Southern Cals and they simply bettered us and retained their place.
The course was long and the pin placements were very difficult. Some of the college coaches in attendance said it played as a par 78. Others stated their teams have played Crane Creek and the pins were never this difficult. Of course, it was the same for everyone and we did an excellent job. Just like #2 Avis, we try harder! To illustrate what I mean our youngest player, Ki-Shui Liao, tied for medalist of the event. The team was great and bringing home the second place medal was great too. Congratulations to our gals.
